Tando Allah Yar: (06 February 2020): An autism awareness seminar was held at Government Provincialized High School to raise awareness among teachers, parents and doctors about different neurological and learning disabilities besides different disorders such as the Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children.

Opening the seminar, Autism Spectrum Disorder Welfare Trust (ASDWT) Representative Dr. Salma said that parents must accept their children with intellectual disabilities and put in maximum efforts to improve the quality of their lives.

The one-day seminar was organised by ASDWT, a project of Mahvash & Jahangir Siddiqui Foundation, in collaboration of Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPD), Government of Sindh. Around 300 teachers, doctors, parents and clinical psychologists attended the seminar where they were briefed in detail about the symptoms of different learning disorders and methods of their management.

Speakers educated the participants about the symptoms of autism in children which included difficulty in mixing with other kids, inappropriate behavior, no fear of danger, little or no eye contact, repetitive and ritualistic behaviors, apparent insensitivity to pain, inappropriate attachment with objects and difficulty in expressing needs.

Parvez Ahmed Seehar, Secretary DEPD in his speech as Chief Guest enumerated the efforts of the government of Sindh in the field not only of autism, but all disabilities in general. He said that we are working very hard and conducting consecutive meetings to achieve our goals. Further he said that every child with disability has a quality and as special educators it is need to find out that quality and focus on that as such children become valuable citizens. If we will focus on traditional ways of learning and try these children to become expert in each subject it is not possible. Mr. Seehar said that we will continue our support on awareness raising on Autism and other disabilities.
